House Updates 13 -- Roxbury Drive, Beverly Hills, California

When this house was on the market in 2019, it was Hollywood director/producer Ryan Murphy's house. Before that, it had been Diane Keaton's house, and very little of her design had been changed. Now it's for sale by yet another owner, and guess what? It's still very much Diane Keaton's house.

A story about the newest owner appeared recently on Architectural Digest's site, which of course meant that the house was just about to go on the market.

It was built in 1926, designed by Ralph Flewelling. Flewelling also designed the USC Hoose Library of Philosophy, below.

Diane Keaton must have pinned that image to her Pinterest board, because her library looks inspired by it. Incidentally, her book The House That Pinterest Built doesn't refer to the Roxbury house, but to another one in Sullivan Canyon. It has a similar color scheme and an impressive library, too, below:

Roxbury didn't have a library until Diane added it.  She bought the property after Madonna had owned it, and promptly made some changes to make the house feel more Spanish Colonial rather than simply dramatic.

Here is the double height entrance hall/library that used to be a basic tall rectangle.

It still reads "the eye sees what the mind knows" in a loop, or "the mind knows the eye sees what" depending on how your eye sees it.

The most recent owner is jewelry designer Cailin Shannon-Wunder who used the space more as a gallery than a library:

Diane changed the living room fireplace from one that was "absurdly pretentious" (sadly, there are no photos of Madonna's interiors) to a more suitable Spanish Colonial design, below:

Ryan Murphy kept her Spanish Revival Monterey furniture:

Cailin Shannon-Wunder brought in more eclectic pieces...

but she obviously appreciated Diane's overall design, as her Instagram comparison photo shows, below:

The dining room table appears to have stayed in the same place since 2007. Only the Monterey-style chairs and buffet table have changed.

The kitchen's inverted pendant shades are still a unique feature in the kitchen.

The great thing about the new listing is that it shows us rooms that weren't featured in previous listings or magazine spreads, like these below:

The house has six bedrooms and nine bathrooms and this is the first time we've seen photos of them. The house has 8,434 square feet.

I think that green bench is the same one that both Diane and Ryan had in the library before.

The master bedroom is the one room that appears to be personalized to each of the owners, although the light fixtures are unchanged:

There's also new photos of the casita. The property sits on .6 of an acre.

The quirky Talavera napping Panchito statues that surrounded the courtyard's octagonal fountain during Ryan's -- and presumably Diane's -- tenure are no longer there.

Regardless of the changes, if it were mine, I would still prefer the blue and white design I suggested in 2019:

I have a feeling though, that the newest owner will also appreciate Diane Keaton's thoughtful and period-appropriate design and will make minimal changes. Or, in realtor-speak: "Now is your opportunity to become part of the impeccable pedigree of ownership."

The listing is here.
